King Pins

I went to Circular Quay on Saturday and it was such an amazing day. The sunshine was out in full force and there was a really happy vibe on the streets. We had coffee and macaroons at the french patisserie and strolled around bookstores and market before reaching our main destination. I went to see the exhibition Rising Tide which is a collection of video works the gallery has acquired over the last six or so years.

One of the standout works was "Welcome to the Jingle" by The King Pins. These are four chicks who dress in drag as men and make social commentaries on gender, sex, public space, consumerism and corporate branding. In the case of Welcome to the Jingle they are four men dressed in matching tracksuits powering through the streets of Sydney on an exercise/dance marathon using Starbucks cafes as centralised checkpoints.

This work cleverly proposes the notion that the city was colonised by franchises and homogenised fast food venues which pretend to be sophisticated and  cultured centres. I stole most of that sentence from: NeMe: The New New: video art in the 21st century by Shaun Wilson. Don't judge me... he just said it better than I could have. Any who.. they propose these fantastic ideas and observations (and others) in great parodies of eighties and nineties music videos. In my opinion loud music, repetitive dance choreography, over dramatic costumes and many shocked unexpected civilians = fun.

The exhibition is on until the end of August and I definitely recommend you pop by. There is also a great work by Patricia Piccinini who I love.
Go... go now!
